On Saturday 5 October I have been invited to participate in the celebrations in connection with accordion player Karl Skaarup's 85th anniversary as a professional accordion player. The anniversary concert takes place in Vestervig Church in Thy, not far from Karl Skaarup's home, and a number of musicians, including the old giant himself, take part in the festivities.
Over the past few years I have been lucky enough to play at a number of workshops and balls together with Karl Skaarup and violinist Kistian Bugge, and I am very much looking forward to playing at the anniversary concert.
I have great respect for the old man and his great knowledge of the traditional music from his home town. Even though Karl will soon turn 90, he is still a musical powerhouse, and it is absolutely fantastic to play with him. He once told me how he played at his first ball in 1928 as a 4-year-old, and how the dancers sang along when he played, thus supporting both him and the well-known melodies. Karl Skaarup is a fantastic musician, he has played accordion all his life and I am sure he will continue to do so until the end.
